Popis: This features article traces the major stages in health and safety research that have marked the history of the different laboratories located at 41 rue Gay-Lussac, Paris. It portrays their evolution, from work physiology and psychology to ergonomics. After explaining the historical significance of the place, the authors describe the researchers’ contributions. The researchers’ goal was to understand and solve the work-related problems of health and safety that arose over time. The period investigated here extends from the early 20th century to the late 80s. The stages and significant events are highlighted as are the cooperation with other institutions and the influences of diverse schools of thought. The evolutions of concepts, themes and solutions dedicated to improving working conditions and the organization of companies are depicted.
