This research looks at online concerts that have seen great success in South Korea during the Covid-19 period. It combines a socio-economic approach and a content analysis to see if this evolution of the live concert is likely to become a new economic model for K-pop. Although national policy efforts exist in South Korea, online K-pop concerts are more of a logical continuation of a system that relies on corporations and private capital. We observe the recent movement of powerful capital in the production of online concerts and an increased dependence on the few broadcasting platforms. The analysis of the content of an online concert shows that the content and technologies used have been specially chosen to approximate the characteristics of the traditional concert. |
