In the Middle Ages, the dimension of the imaginary often confu-sed the perception of reality with a process of abstraction. In this way, the representation of a cathedral could at the same time be the very idea of the cathedral. The imaginary was part of the field of representation not as sim-ple reproduction but as the transposition of an internal dimension. In art, as in literature, real representations are often used to evoke imaginary con-cepts. The dimension of the imaginary was accompanied by that of the symbolic, which consisted in the reference of the object considered to an implied, historical and ideal system of values. |
