Popis: | INTRODUCTION: Acute hypoglycemia is a severe state which represents the most common acute complication in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus. AIM: The survey aimed at proving that hypoglycemia can be successfully treated by applying smaller amount of concentrated glucose up to 30 ml of 50% glucose intravenously. Oral intake of foodstuffs is strongly recommended to compensate glucose when patient's condition regarding the consciousness is achieved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In period from 1.1.2013 to 30.06.2014 the retrospective study found 162 cases that were later identified and registered as hypoglycemia patients. Data used were taken reversely from protocol of mobile teams and the Emergency Department of Banja Luka. RESULTS: Of the total number of patients, in particular 162 patients, 134 (82,7%) of patients adequately responded to the applied therapy whilst 28 (17,3%) patients was treated with no result and needed inpatient treatment. It has been found that patients equally responded well when smaller number of 50% glucose ampoules was applied comparing to those patients that were administered bigger glucose amount (larger number of 50% glucose ampoules or mixture of injection solution of 5% glucose and concentrated 50% glucose ampoule). There is no connection between the number of ampoules and the treatment outcome (p=0,32). CONCLUSION: Tracking the hypoglycemia treatment outcome by physicians at the Emergency Office of Banja Luka, it has been found that even smaller amount of glucose can positively result in correcting blood sugar level in patients with hypoglycemia diagnosed. |
