Popis: This review is devoted to such a concept as adhesion. The diversity, in which this phenomenon exists, and many theories describing it create some uncertainty in its definition and, ultimately, its understanding. Understanding of adhesion is of particular interest, especially under the control of strength characteristics of the composite materials. A number of definitions used in the scientific literatureis provided, which allows to distinguish three groups of definitions. The first define adhesion as a property, the second define adhesion a process, and the third define adhesion as a condition. Considering different approaches and theories showed that for composite materials there is a common thing in the definitions of adhesion – the interphase boundary between contacting thermodynamic phases. Thus, the authors conclude that there is currently no clear definition of "adhesion".
