The growing presence in Italy of refugees and asylum seekers has increased the need for appropriate policies aimed not only to migrants’ first aid, but also to their integration into our society. In this context, in many Italian cities experiences of psychological support to refugees have arisen through projects that are part of the System of Protection for Refugees and Asylum Seekers. The purpose of this paper is to carry out a reflection on the work experience of the group Psicologi nel Mondo – Torino with refugees. First, however, the characteristics of refugees are analyzed, taking into account the problems linked to their legal status and highlighting the specificity of their social and psychological condition in the phase following the arrival. Then, the paper analyzes some fundamental approaches to psychological work with refugees, inspiring different models of intervention in Western countries: in particular, those focused on the treatment of PTSD, ecological and psychosocial approaches and those inspired to ethnopsychology. Subsequently, the Turin experience is presented, defining both its theoretical and methodological references, and its strengths and weaknesses. Finally, more general considerations are proposed about the "therapeutic governance" in Italy. In particular the conclusion highlights the absence of policies that favour an integrated approach, allowing migrants not only to redefine their identity, but also to enter actively into Italian society bringing in it new human and cultural resources. |
