When the first uprisings burst in Petersburg, the officials of the Italian Socialist Party had a superficial knowledge of the Russian socialism, despite the contacts they had in Zimmerwald and Kienthal. The censorship prevailed everywhere and the obligation to resort to second-hand and third-hand news hardly let possible forming a clear idea and in real time of what happened in Russia. Contradictions and continual oscillations of the judgments characterized above all the articles of the newspaper «Avanti!», but actually every current into which the Socialist Party was split tended to share and highlight only those Russian facts deemed useful to their own side when inner disagreements occurred. In the postwar period, the Russian revolution influenced the strategies and the programs of every political faction. |
