This article analyses the process of social visibilisation and empowerment carried out by French popular music artists and professionals in the first two decades of the twenty first century, as they challenge the cis- and heteropatriarchal gender system. Using the concept of feminisation in a non-essentializing way, not restricted to women, this article explores the songs, symbols and discourses that popular music artists use to question traditional gender and sexuality roles, in France and in French-speaking Switzerland and Belgium. The article historicizes the minority position of female and LGBTQIA+ artists in twentieth century French popular music, both in commercial and critical terms. It shows that a new generation of music professionals break down musical and gender hierarchies through their aesthetic and militant practice. |
