Due to the hypercritical style and unbridled satire of his newspapers, the priest Francisco de Paula Castañeda earned the enmity of Martín Rodríguez, governor of Buenos Aires –mainly of his chief minister, Bernardino Rivadavia– resulting in his first exile sentence in 1821. In number 73 of Despertador Teofilantrópico Místico-Político, which came to light once the friar was already back in Buenos Aires, Castañeda published an extensive text about his exile. The paper analyzes this account that includes very interesting points revealing the winding stands of the priest with respect to reading, knowledge, tradition, history and its relationship with experience. |
