The article looks into the political and legal justification of the transfer of the Crimean region from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954. It is noted that this event left a noticeable imprint on the policy of national memory in the post-Soviet space, and the ongoing discussion on this issue is centered around two main topics: the motives of the decision of the Soviet leadership to transfer Crimea to Ukraine and the legal justification of this act. Based on the analysis of the fundamental legal documents of that time: the texts of the Constitution, the laws, decrees and resolutions of the supreme bodies of the state power of the USSR and the union republics, the author concludes that the transfer of the Crimean region was generally legally correct, in full compliance with the USSR political traditions and law enforcement practices of territorial and administrative arrangement of the country. |
