Xeriscape Design Application in the Case Study of Ankara Etimesgut Yıldırım Beyazıt Park, Turkey

Popis: The problem of decreasing usable water resources which has an important problem in environmental problems started in the 19th century and became the biggest problem of the century we live in. With the increasing water shortage, human beings have sought for the sustainable and effective use of water which is an exhaustible natural resource. In this study, the concept of xeriscape in which the efficient and recyclable use of water is aimed has been evaluated on the sample of Ankara Etimesgut Yıldırım Beyazıt Park. In the study, two different experimental areas of 1 square meter were established and classical landscaping was done in one of the areas and xeriscape in the other. With the weekly schedule tracking, the irrigation amounts of the test areas were written into the tables and the amount of water used was followed in 10 months. Therefore, the difference between the amount of water used in classical landscaping and xeriscape was clearly demonstrated. The data obtained as a result of the study were compared with the Ankara Etimesgut Yıldırım Beyazıt Park. The amount of water usage and water savings was determined numerically. The study area is located in the landslide zone with its sloping topography. The study gave an idea about the selection of xeriscape plant species in such areas. It has shown that soil losses can also be reduced thanks to the arid plant species and less water use.
