Popis:	This paper discusses the factors which affect the semantic understanding of calques. High understanding and widespread acceptance of calques contribute to the stylistic stratification of these expressions. Three stylistic characteristics of calques are examined: first, their relation to functional styles of standard Croatian; second, their transfer from one functional style to another; third, their stylistic markedness.
