Popis: This descriptive study was conducted in order to characterize domestic violence in 5th grade children belonging to Julio Pino Machado Joint School in Santa Clara, Villa Clara province, from September 2010 to July 2011. Of a population of 79 students, a sample of 50 children was selected through an intentional non-probability sampling. A data collection form that allowed the diagnosis of domestic violence was used. Once it was implemented as a technique of the investigative process, the school cumulative records of the students were reviewed, a semistructured interview was conducted and a test of perception of family functioning was applied. The main results showed a predominance of psychological violence, the method of fighting, drinking alcohol, disharmonic family relationships and dysfunctional family functioning, with a higher incidence in extended families. It generated disorders in the intellectual and emotional functioning of the children, mainly hyperactivity and poor motivation.
