Popis: The article examines the formation of Cheka’s policy towards the Orthodox Russian Church in December 1917 — November 1918. The main milestones in the rise of anti-church terror are traced. Drawing on a variety of sources, including archival documents made public for the fi rst time, the article describes the attempt by the Chekists to organise a political trial of Patriarch Tikhon and the church in early 1918, as well as preparations for the arrest of the Patriarch and members of the Local Council in September 1918. The article also shows the struggle in the Soviet ruling elite around the policy towards the church, the reasons that infl uenced its formation in the studied period. It is concluded that since the summer of 1918, the KGB repression against representatives of the Church began to acquire a large-scale character. By the autumn of 1918, the Cheka had apparently turned into the main body that carried out repression of the clergy and believers. From the end of May 1918, the Chekists began to think about the possibility of operational penetration into the environment of the clergy and about its split. However, the steps taken in this direction were not developed. The dominant method of infl uencing the church and believers remained repression and threats.
