This paper presents a theoretical and experimental analysis of the instantaneous angular velocity and torque produced by an Otto single cylinder engine; this analysis makes it possible to characterize how the engine performs along the cycle and to understand what geometrical or thermal parameters can influence the instantaneous torque, what leads to an influence of instantaneous velocity and consequently its performance and efficiency. The study of instantaneous torque on a single cylinder engine reveals the importance of the internal components inertia to control the amplitude of angular velocity fluctuations and ensure stable engine operation. It is further shown that the variation in the inertial forces on the reciprocating components with velocity has a huge impact on instantaneous torque profile, and consequently on angular velocity fluctuations. |
