This article examines the place and role of the “Rossia i latinstvo” collection in the evolution of the Eurasian system of views. Eurasianism made itself widely known in the early 1920s, becoming a notable phenomenon in the history of not only Russian emigration, but also Russian historiosophical thought in general. In the first two collections of Eurasians — «Exodus to the East» and «On the Paths», the contours of the new concept were outlined. Two theses were of decisive importance: anti-Westernism and the special path of Russia-Eurasia. The desire to expand the readership and attract new authors led to the publication of an anti-Catholic collection, the reason for its appearance was the events in Russia related to the activities of the «renovationists» and contacts between representatives of the Vatican and the Soviet delegation at the Genoa Conference. The Eurasians seriously feared that the difficult situation of the Orthodox Church at home and the repression against Orthodox priests could contribute to the transition of some of the laity in emigration to Catholicism. The appearance of the collection was preceded by difficult preparatory work and coordination of articles with the general direction of the movement leaders’ plan. On the collection pages were published both the first “Eurasian” works of G. V. Vernadsky and V. N. Ilyin, and the last works of P. M. Bitsilli and G. V. Florovsky completing their collaboration with the movement. The departure of the latter from the movement became a certain milestone in the evolution of Eurasianism, after which its politicization and organizational strengthening began. The correspondence of the Eurasians reflected this internal struggle and confrontation between the founders of the movement, during which they demonstrated their own vision of the evolution of Eurasianism. The collection met with several very critical publications from representatives of emigrant thought — N. A. Berdyaev, I. A. Ilyin, G. N. Trubetskoy. In modern historiography, the collection was considered in the general context of the study of Eurasians’ religious views and the experience of their cooperation with other figures of Russian emigration. The collection “Russia and Latinism” had a serious impact on the development of the Eurasian system of views, becoming a vivid embodiment of its anti-Western attitude. |
