Italian sensibility about the Novel was supposed to have developed later and differently compared to the rest of Europe. Giuseppe Maria Galanti’s essay Osservazioni intorno a’ romanzi, alla morale e a’ diversi generi di sentimento shows how Italian culture was connected with the new taste and sensibility for this genre. The critical edition of the Osservazioni, edited by Domenica Falardi, demonstrates how, from Naples to Venice, Italian readers were tuned in with the rest of Europe. In particular, this essay talks about a new position of women in Italian society and suggests the need to re-evaluate Italian Novels in the light of more recent studies on the History of Emotions. |
