Popis: ABSTRACT This paper reports the results of an investigation of the meanings unemployed people attribute to their work. The sample comprised 358 short-term (from one to six months) unemployed workers. Data were collected using a standardized questionnaire based on a five-dimensional meaning of work model that was previously adapted to the Brazilian context. The data were submitted to a confirmatory factor analysis. The results suggest that there might not be specificities in the meanings unemployed workers attribute to their work, considering that the five-factor structure of the meaning of work model was empirically supported. The results indicate that the variables length of unemployment, number of formal jobs, age, and schooling were significantly correlated with the number of dimensions of the meaning of work model.
