This study focuses on the five points cross juxtaposed to the royal signature in the Portuguese diplomas from 1448 to 1910, which was adopted in parallel to the establishment of the classic version of the Ourique legend by chroniclers such as Vasco de Lucena or Rui Galvão who simultaneously worked at the royal chancery. After reviewing the precursors of such style, in particular queen Leonor Teles, the article explains how it was adopted by Afonso V, both for the solemn subscription of the documentary types with extensive title, as well as for the simplest one, typical of those titled shortly. Then, I analyse its evolution under the following kings, who kept the cross of quinas next to the ceremonial signature until the very abolition of the monarchy in 1910, while in the simple one it disappeared with John VI. |
