Popis:	This article analyses two peripheral rural regions: West Eifel and West Pomerania in Germany. Both are affected by demographic change and are subject to distinct shrinking and ageing processes. There are many similarities between the two regions, but also serious contradictions. The demographic change does not have the same effect in both research areas. Hence the article looks into the subject, under which specific conditions the explosiveness of the demographic change is going to be intensified or diminished.
