Boost and boost-derived converters play an important role in interfacing the low voltage input from renewable energy sources like photovoltaic (PV) panels with the high voltage DC bus or DC load. Interleaved boost converters (IBC) are a separate class of converters which have been in practical use for more than a decade. In this paper, high gain interleaved boost DC-DC converters are reviewed. Some gain extension mechanisms which are usually embedded along with the IBC structure are discussed. Such high gain converters are categorized based on their adopted gain extension mechanism. Further, the performance of the converters which employ hybrid combinations of few gain extension cells are also reviewed. The voltage gain capability, advantages, disadvantages, number of components employed and other salient features of all such interleaved high gain DC-DC converters are reviewed in detail. The review outcomes are portrayed using tables and images. Based on the voltage gain requirements, power level and efficiency of the target applications, the user may choose to adopt more than one gain extension technique. |
