Spaces left vacant on the outskirts of town are seen as available for use in daily life (places to live or to eat), where activities offer so many experiments in coexistence between different groups and individuals. In these communal spaces, social exchanges are materialised through objects that create a social bond; interactions between inhabitants lead to the emergence of new values and a reinforced awareness of shared interests. Using studies on kitchen gardens and an experiment in popular education through social prevention carried out in an industrial wasteland in Alsace, this contribution shows how new urban social relations emerge, through both proximity and distance, giving rise to voluntary, autonomous initiatives on the part of informed local actors committed to collective projects serving as a vector for the social transactions that are essential for renewing social relations. |
