Popis: | Purpose. The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of reduplication as one of the types of repetitions used as ways of constructing new words. Evolutionary signs of reduplication have showed its inseparable connection with morphology, semantics and syntax. The author aims to consider the semantic and grammatical features of the formation and functioning of reduplicative forms in the Ossetian language. The method or methodology of the work performed. Methods of the comparative and structural analysis as well as generalization are used. Results. The volume and heterogeneity of semantic differences caused the need in the framework of this article to be limited to one morphological class, i.e. the verb and its forms. The study has showed that almost all verbs, based on their own semantics, are amenable to reduplication. Reduplicative forms are formed using verbal prefixes. In this regard, all productive preverbs in the Ossetian language are considered in order to determine their ability/inability to reduplication and identify semantic and grammatical changes in the educated forms. Grammatical changes include the formal transition from the simple verb to the nominal part of the complex, as well as a change in the category of the form. The semantic changes include various additional meanings arising from reduplication based on the proper meaning of word-forming morphemes. And in some case, they can be replaced or acquire the opposite meaning depending on the context. The analysis allowed to deduce the main types of reduplicative forms and their productivity. Practical implications. The results of the study can be useful in the study of the morphological status of verbal lexemes in the Ossetian language, as well as in the further study of reduplication as a linguistic phenomenon. |
