The analysis of a writer’s manuscripts can look behind the scenes of literary creation and reveal writing processes that are not visible when reading the published work. This is certainly true of the French poet and diplomat Saint-John Perse (1887-1975), whose manuscripts are preserved at the Fondation Saint-John Perse in Aix-en-Provence, and in particular of the creation of the poem Éloges (1911; 1925), which is the subject of this study. This unclassifiable and enigmatic work by Saint-John Perse has always been described as essentially “French”, since the poet considered the French language to be the “only imaginable home”. The avant-textes of Éloges, however, reveal the meanderings of a translingual genesis, in which the procedures of a translational writing are revealed. The genetic study proposed here will therefore analyse the features and mechanisms of this scriptural evolution from Guadeloupean Creole to French, and examine the forms and effects of interaction between languages within the poetic genesis. |
