Diabetes mellitus is common among patients undergoing stent implantation therapy. Although bioresorbable iron stents have good biocompatibility and mechanical performance, most supporting evidence has been obtained from studies conducted under normoglycemic conditions; thus, the reality in patients with diabetes is unknown. We introduced a hyperglycemic circulation device that measured iron stent degradation to address this issue. A hyperglycemia co-culture medium was used to evaluate biocompatibility after iron stent degradation. A diabetic rabbit model was established to confirm the results of in vitro assays. The significant findings were as follows: a) iron stent degradation increased under hyperglycemic conditions, affecting the mechanical supporting properties; b) iron stent degradation under hyperglycemic conditions inhibited endothelial cell viability and proliferation; c) iron stent degradation increased in diabetes, preventing re-endothelialization; and d) diabetes-induced iron stent degradation promoted inflammatory responses. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the biological profile of iron stent degradation in diabetes, highlighting the different features of iron stent degradation in patients with hyperglycemia. |
