Popis: | Abstract This Critical Synthesis Package contains: (1) a Critical Analysis of the psychometric properties and the application to health sciences education and health sciences education research of the Major Depression Inventory (MDI), and (2) a copy of the MDI instrument and the scoring instructions developed by Per Bech, MD. The MDI is a 12-item self-report questionnaire that measures the frequency of 10 symptoms of depression as identified by the DSM-IV and ICD-10, over a 2-week period. The MDI can be used as a diagnostic instrument to ascertain if criteria for depression are met and as a measuring tool to identify severity of symptoms of depression. The diagnostic validity and psychometric properties of the MDI have been confirmed in multiple studies in various clinical populations, and indicate a unidimensional scale to measure symptoms of depression. The MDI can be used in a general outpatient psychiatric clinic or among psychiatric inpatients. The MDI can be used both as a diagnostic instrument and as a method to measure severity of symptoms. The instrument has been used among learners in the health professions, although further research is needed to validate the instrument with learners and faculty in the health professions. The use of the MDI with participants requires a protocol to ensure that participants identified with mental health needs are referred to the appropriate mental health services. |
