Popis: | I present the Local Volume Database (LVDB), a catalog of the observed properties of dwarf galaxies and star clusters in the Local Group and Local Volume. The LVDB includes positional, structural, kinematic, chemical, and dynamical parameters for dwarf galaxies and star clusters. I discuss the motivation, structure, construction, and future expansion plans of the LVDB. I highlight catalogs on faint and compact ambiguous Milky Way systems, new Milky Way globular clusters and candidates, and globular clusters in nearby dwarf galaxies. The LVDB is complete for known dwarf galaxies within $\sim 3 ~{\rm Mpc}$ and current efforts are underway to expand the database to resolved star systems in the Local Volume. I present publicly available examples and use cases of the LVDB focused on the census and population-level properties of the Local Group and discuss some theoretical avenues. The next decade will be an exciting era for near-field cosmology with many upcoming surveys and facilities, such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, the Euclid mission, and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, that will both discover new dwarf galaxies and star clusters in the Local Volume and characterize known dwarf galaxies and star clusters in more detail than ever before. The LVDB will be continually updated and is built to support and enable future dwarf galaxy and star cluster research in this data-rich era. The LVDB catalogs and package are publicly available as a GitHub repository, $\texttt{local_volume_database}$, and community use and contributions via GitHub are encouraged.
