Popis:	For a general class of non-negative functions defined on integral ideals of number fields, upper bounds are established for their average over the values of certain principal ideals that are associated to irreducible binary forms with integer coefficients. Comment: 22 pages; this was formally part of an investigation of Manin's conjecture for del Pezzo surfaces of degree four (arXiv:1609.09057). We have excised it to form a separate paper, in order to shorten the length of the paper on del Pezzo surfaces
