Popis: | This paper presents the evaluation of the sodium-sulfur batterytechnology in energy storage and power quality applications. The evaluation of thistechnology in the USA was first performed at the Dolan Technology Center of AmericanElectric Power, Columbus, Ohio. In the first phase of the research, extensive testing andanalyses were performed on a sample module to understand the internal characteristicsand dynamics of the battery, and then performance drivers were defined. Ademonstration project that combines nominal rating of 500kW for 30 seconds of powerquality mitigation and up to 750kWh of peak shaving capacity at a maximum power of100kW was installed in September 2003 at one of AEP’s Office Buildings in Gahanna,Ohio. Evaluation so far has shown that the sodium sulfur batteries can solve variety ofpower quality problems and provide economical energy storage for a wide range ofpower system and energy management applications. AEP and the project partners arecontinuing to monitor and evaluate the system. |
