Examination of corrosion damages on pipes in brewery

Popis: Occurrence of perforation (leaks) on pipeline in Zajecar brewery was examined. Perforation of stainless steel tubes (AISI 304L) came from the bottom of the tube, near the welds. Causes of corrosion damage to the pipes were analyzed. The presence of the free iron on the inner surface of the pipe was tested by ferroxyl method. The tensile properties of the stainless steel were determined. The large number of inclusions and voids in the structure of stainless steel was revealed by metallographic examination. The increased presence of pores and inclusions in the stainless steel structure did not significantly affect its tensile properties. Near the weld, pitting corrosion occurred due to the retention of electrolyte in the pores. This phenomenon was found in regions of inclusions and defects present on the surface of the metal pipe. Progress of corrosion in the pits, increase in acidity of the solution and progress of pitting corrosion in depth, resulted in perforation of the stainless steel tube.
