Efficiency and profitability attract the attention of various structures. So far, there is no general consensus regarding which indicators should be used for representing these two concepts. Reviewing of recent economic and banking literature we decided to use cost to income ratio (C/I ratio) as proxy for efficiency, because it is often used in practice. Profitability is represented by two indicators, Return on equity (ROE) and Net interest margin (NIM). Data obtained from Serbian banks were exposed to statistical test in order to examine the link between two concepts mentioned above. First sample included only data from 2009, while the second one included all data collected during the period 2003-2009. Samples were analyzed and interpreted with correlation analysis. The results of sample analysis show that the there is a strong statistical correlation between efficiency and profitability. |
