Popis: | The author of the article draws attention to the desire of Bible translators, among which was Ivan Ogienko, to combine authenticity of the translation with the devotion to the linguistic and confessional traditions. On the focus of scientifc research are Targums, the ancient Hebrew translations of the Old Testament, the study of which allows to see in them a peculiar interpretation of biblical texts, conditioned by the specific city of the texts and the specific purpose set by the translator. Targums were intended for Jews, for whom Hebrew wasn’t any longer a spoken language. There appeared a necessity not just for translations that would teach the basics of Judaism, but for new interpretations of the biblical text as a main spiritual basis of the Jewish people in the alternative political and socio-cultural reality. Very often due to the lack of information the text of Scripture provokes a translator to interpretation. Thus, it resulted in the emergence of Midrash (interpretation, commentary) as a peculiar genre. In the texts of Midrash and Targums by Jonathan and Onkelost, the authors try to give a new interpretation in accordance with the realities of the time, rising the live interest of the recipients and demonstrating their fundamental religious views. While Targum created for the Jews (Aramaic) was intended to teach them the basics of Judaism, the Septuagint and Pshita (a Christian translation of Tanakh into Syriac-Aramaic), and the Vulgate, a translation into Latin of the 4th century AD, as well as the ancient translations made from the Septuagint suggest a Christian interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, setting up the tenets of Christianity. Thus, ancient Hebrew translations of biblical texts proved that the authors introduced both national linguistic and cultural connotations, and also confessional features into the translated text.
