Udgivelsesdato: 26. oktober In 1967, the only Danish Department for the History of Ideas opened at the University of Aarhus. This article traces its turbulent history from Johannes Sløks professorship, through the Marxist 1970s, the crisis in the 1980s and the reorganisation of the 1990s, to the fusion with the Department of Philosophy in 2004. Drawing on comparative studies of the development of the discipline of history of ideas in the United States, Norway and Sweden, the contingent nature of institutionalisation and discipline-building is emphasised. Furthermore, this article argues that a bottom-up perspective focusing on the students and their theoretical and practical work can add fruitful insights to the ongoing essentialist debate on the disciplinary characteristics of the history of ideas. |
