A Portuguese as an additional language course which centrally explores storytelling started in 2010, at the Portuguese for Foreigners Program of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Until 2018, fourteen iterations of the course were held. In this article, we introduce the elaboration of the course, some of its activities, the teaching goals and the curricular structure, as well as the notions that underlie the course conception: discourse genres, pedagogical projects and storytelling as performance. In the course, storytelling and language teaching intertwine through a project that culminates in a storytelling circle event. From this experience, we explore aspects that underlie the development of the course, such as playfulness and pleasure; the importance of choosing the story to be told; improvisation; multiplicity of readings and meanings of the stories; the collectivity; disinhibition; and the importance of an interdisciplinary team. |
