The National Contingency Plan concerning strandings of marine mammals in Denmark is run jointly by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, the Danish Nature Agency, the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg, the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, the Department of Ecoscience, Aarhus University in Roskilde, Aalborg University in Aalborg and Center forDiagnostics, DTU in Lyngby (the latter only to the end of 2021). The primaryobjectives of the plan are to record all stranded marine mammals along theDanish coastline and to monitor the health status of the Danish populationsof seals and cetaceans. Tissue samples and skeletal remains from strandedmarine mammals are collected and stored by the two museums and atAarhus University in order to secure samples for future research projects. Moreover, whenever possible the contingency plan aims to ensure thatsick or distressed marine mammals are euthanized. This publication focuses on stranded marine mammals registered in 2020. Besides this abstract all the figure and table captions are also given in English. |
