Popis: Nitrogen contamination in fresh and coastal water ecosystems is a major environmental threat. To tackle this challenge denitrifying woodchip bioreactors were built as buffer zones between contaminating areas and receiving ecosystems. These bioreactors are installed to remove nitrate from agricultural drainage water, but have low efficiency during the winter season. During the present study, the potential to use microbes to enhance nitrate removal in these treatment systems at low water temperature was investigated using microbiological and molecular methods. First focusing on the field microbial ecology, we then conducted enrichment and isolated cultures of cold-adapted denitrifying bacteria aiming to implement a microbial management to improve the drainage water treatment in woodchip bioreactors under low temperature conditions.
