In recent years, computational thinking has become part of the mathematics curriculum in several countries. Often, this has led curriculum resources in mathematics to transition toward an explicit integration of programming and computational thinking (PCT). This transition is still in its early stage. However, at this point in time, we are able to see the preliminary results in terms of how concepts and actions from programming are being merged with mathematics in curriculum resources. In this paper, we investigate and compare how curriculum resources developed in Denmark and Sweden have incorporated programming and computational thinking in mathematics for grades 1–6 (age 7–12). More specifically, we investigate and compare the PCT concepts and actions, the mathematical concepts, and the co-occurrence of mathematical concepts and PCT concepts and actions within the curriculum resources in these two countries. Our analysis reveals that Danish resources are oriented toward PCT concepts related to data, actions related to programming, and mathematical concepts within statistics. This is very different from Swedish tasks, which are oriented toward PCT concepts related to instructions, actions related to following step-wise instructions, and mathematical concepts related to patterns. That is, what is most dominant in one country is almost or completely absent in the other. We conclude the paper by discussing the opportunities and limitations of these two approaches against the backdrop of existing knowledge on computational thinking in school mathematics. |
