While digital transition offers theme parks many affordances in terms of customer experience advancement and operational improvements, the transition is not without setbacks. We present a multiple-case study of Danish theme parks to address a specific digital adoption problem for park managers: how synthetic, virtual experiences appear to counter and erode the fun “family day out.” While digital additions improve the customer experience in various ways, they appear to intrinsically diminish it in one particular and important way. By investigating the choices Danish theme park managers are making as they address this problem, we define more clearly it’s nature and scope, document emerging solutions, and situate this within the ongoing research literature on limits associated with digital transition. We anticipate that the insights and solutions gleaned from the theme park industry have relevance across cognate industries of hospitality, tourism and leisure, and also extend to other sectors such as education, religion, or the museum industry where digital adoption presents a similar problem. |
