Popis: Dictionaries for Text Production are information tools that are designed and constructed for helping users to produce (i.e. encode) texts, both oral and written texts. These can be broadly divided into two groups: (a) specialized text production dictionaries, i.e., dictionaries that only offer a small amount of lexicographic data, most or all of which are typically used in a production situation, e.g. synonym dictionaries, grammar and spelling dictionaries, collocation dictionaries, concept dictionaries such as the Longman Language Activator, which is advertised as the World’s First Production Dictionary; (b) general text production dictionaries, i.e., dictionaries that offer all or most of the lexicographic data that are typically used in a production situation. A review of existing production dictionaries reveals that there are many specialized text production dictionaries but only a few general text production ones, perhaps because this new type of dictionary has come to life in the era of the internet and in connection with the second stage of disruptive innovation, the one that relentlessly moves up market, eventually displacing established competitors, e.g. current printed dictionaries and free online dictionaries. The Diccionario español para la producción de textos is an example of a general text production dictionary that makes use of internet technologies, is based on a lexicographic theory, contains all the lexicographic data that users need in a production situation, and aims to moves up market and be sold as a typical product of a knowledge-based economy. Within the above framework, the focus of this chapter lies in a critical discussion of the concept of dictionary for text production itself as well as of the specific needs users have in two specific production situations: (a) users with text production needs in a foreign language; (b) users with text production needs in their native language.
