Presentations at the First International Conference on Nutrition and HIV Infection, held in April in Cannes, France, documented the positive role that objective multifactional nutritional support can have in managing disease complications. Overall, consensus was that the current system for accurate clinical evaluation of nutritional status, to the extent that it can serve as a basis for nutritional intervention that is relevant to patient outcome, lacks significant data and methods that are applicable to the HIV-positive population. However, nutritional intervention can have positive outcomes that are meaningful to the patient in terms of improved quality of life, and can be accomplished economically. |
