The relative frequency of occurrence of all types of thyroid malignancy in both surgical and autopsy material in a general teaching hospital are reported. Over the 1963-1969 period at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital thyroid malignancy was found at autopsy in 17 instances, representing an incidence of 0.7%. 9 of the 17 thyroid cancers were incidental findings at autopsy and were unrelated to clinical symptoms or to the patient's death. During this same period, 37 thyroid carcinomas were removed surgically at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. The patients who died as a result of thyroid carcinoma each had a surgical specimen included in this listing. The median age of patients with papillary carcinoma was 26 years, follicular carcinoma was 44 years, and giant cell carcinoma was 61 years. There were 14 men and 23 women. There were 8 patients with thyroid malignancy responsible for death. A case report is included. |
