Popis: | A study conducted by Dr. Susan Philliber with support from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, "Sterilization Decision Making and Consequences among Poor Women," offers important information for family planning counselors. This study, which was carried out in 1985-89, involved interviews with 1800 women at public hospitals clinics in Atlanta, New York City, and Pittsburgh. Unique was the longitudinal design of the study, which enabled multiple interviews with subjects over a 4-year period. Approval on the part of the male partner emerged as the most significant determinant of whether women actually followed through on sterilization. Also significant were the women's expectations before sterilization. Those who expected a negative outcome were less likely to accept the procedure or, if they proceeded with sterilization, to experience subsequent regret. Women who desired no more children but decided against sterilization and then became pregnant were 7 times more likely to regret not having had the procedure than their counterparts who accepted sterilization. Most importantly, the study identified numerous systemic barriers poor women face when they seek to obtain sterilization. These barriers included the need for repeated clinic visits in advance of the procedure, the nonavailability of weekend surgery for women who elect postpartum sterilization, a lack of provider knowledge that the 30-day waiting period required by Medicaid can be waived in cases of postpartum procedures, and funding problems. |
