The rabbits fed cholesterol show significant changes in lipid metabolism and develop hypercholesterolemia that indicate that development of experimental atherosclerosis in the animals. At the same time there is an increase in the chemiluminescence intensity of apo-B-containing lipoproteins in the presence of divalent iron, reflecting the enhancement of lipid peroxidation in apo-B-containing lipoproteins of rabbit blood serum. The increased chemiluminescence of apo-B-containing lipoproteins within the early stages of experimental atherosclerosis can be used for early diagnosis of atherosclerosis on an experimental and clinical basis. |
