In several insect species, resistance to pyrethroids and DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is linked to point mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) gene. Pyrethroid-based insecticides prolong the opening of sodium channels, causing paralysis known as a "knockdown" effect before mortality occurs.
