To determine the frequency of cardiovascular risk factors in patients of different ages with ischemic cerebrovascular accident.Patients and methods. Descriptive, retrospective study of 1,077 patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack.Arterial hypertension (49%-67%) and atrial fibrillation (38%-46%) were the most prevalent risk factors in men and women aged over 65 years. Among individuals aged less than 65 years, smoking in men (58%) and arterial hypertension (64%) and hyperlipidemia (36%) in women predominated. Atrial fibrillation was particularly frequent in patients aged over 80 years (46% in men and 52% in women). On the basis of the high prevalence of arterial hypertension and atrial fibrillation in these patients, the appropriate management of these conditions should by a priority for the prevention of cerebrovascular diseases, especially in advanced aged patients. |
