The authors have analyzed the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in 2210 diabetics older than 75 years in a population of 13,733 equally aged inhabitants of the same geographic area. The DM prevalence ratio of women over 75 years was 17.9%; in men, 17.7%. The prevalence curve reaches its peak at the age of 79, both with women (20.6%) and men (20.0%). The rapid decline of the DM prevalence occurs with patients over 88 years of age. 58% of all investigated patients were between 75 and 79 years of age, and 98% of all investigated diabetics were within a range from 75 to 88 years of age. |
