Popis: Adiponectin, an adipocyte-derived hormone is implicated in insulin resistance and atherosclerosis. The aim of our study is to compare the levels of adiponectin in subjects with prediabetes and diabetes with subjects with normal glucose. In a cross sectional study, we measured adiponectin and insulin in addition to fasting lipid panel and glucose in 28 subjects with prediabetes, 28 subjects with normal fasting glucose and 33 subjects with type 2 diabetes.Adiponectin levels negatively correlate with insulin resistance index (r = -32.7). There is a significant difference in the levels of adiponectin between subjects with prediabetes and normal fasting glucose. There is a significant difference in adiponectin levels in subjects with prediabetes with Coronary artery disease (CAD) compared to those without CAD (10.24+/-1.02 vs. 7.02+/-0.92 with p0.01). There is a significant difference in adiponectin levels in subjects with CAD compared to those without coronary artery disease (9.94+/-1.02 vs. 5.02+/-0.82 with p0.01).We conclude that decreased plasma adiponectin and insulin resistance coexist in subjects with prediabetes, diabetes and atherosclerosis. Adiponectin concentration is an independent correlate of insulin resistance and atherosclerosis.
