Popis: Cognitive impairment affects 40-70% of multiple sclerosis patients. It occurs in all stages of the disease and reduces quality of life. Cognitive areas mainly involved are memory, information-processing speed, attention and executive functions. Cognitive performance can be affected by other factors, including depression, fatigue, disease course and medication. Advanced neuroimaging has helped to increase our knowledge about structural and functional mechanisms responsible for cognitive decline in multiple sclerosis. Early detection of cognitive impairment is essential to provide appropriate therapeutic intervention.
