Syphilis has re-emerged as a significant public health problem in the United States and Missouri. Reported cases of primary and secondary (PS) syphilis and congenital syphilis in Missouri have been increasing since the late 1980s, and a major outbreak of these diseases continues in the St. Louis area. The nature of syphilis combined with certain characteristics of those populations at highest risk of infection can make prevention and control difficult. Achieving success requires the cooperative efforts of practicing physicians and public health professionals. |
