The impregnation of surgical suture material, drainage systems, and implants (rubber, plastic, and metallic objects) with antibiotics and anticoagulants by means of ultrasound in an electric field are discussed. The impregnated objects acquire antibacterial properties which they retain when stored for several months and for 5 to 10 days when implanted into the body. Impregnation with heparin by the same method prevents plugging of the system in long-term intravenous infusion. |
